Maybe somebody can answer this for me:

If I play these notes: C D E F G A B C
we call it the C major scale.

If I skip F and B and play: C D E G A C
we call it the C major pentatonic scale .

If I play these notes: D E F G A B C D
we call it the D Dorian scale.

if I skip F and B and play: D E G A C D
can I call this the D Dorian pentatonic scale?

and so on... ???

so that G A C D E G would be G Mixolydian pentatonic?

Thanks!

I'm not sure if they're actually called those names, but you can use them
that way. This is much the same as when we use the C Major Pentatonic scale
over an Am chord. It's now considered the A Minor Pentatonic scale.

You may find that some "modes" of the Pentatonic scale don't outline the
chord as much as you might like. The F and B notes are kind of integral to
the D Dorian sound, as well as the G Mixolydian sound.

However, you *can* superimpose alternate pentatonic scales over chords. For
example, over the CMaj7 chord, you could play a D Major Pentatonic, which
would yield the 9, 3rd, #11, 13, & 7 over the C chord. Or try the E Minor
Pentatonic over the C Major chord. This gives 3rd, 5th, 13th, 7th, & 9th.
Nice sound for a CMaj chord.

of course you can, there are no " cannots" in music, but.........:-)
how to you hear D E G A C D? the "main" tones in dorian are the b3
(F)( makes the scale minor ) and the 6 (B) ( makes the scale dorian;
aeolian has a b6,......) so i don't hear here dorian. i still hear a
"kind of C major pentatonic".
the minor pentatonic has the formular 1 b3 4 5 b7
so a pentationic scale with the formular 1 b3 5 6 b7 i would call
"dorian-pentatonic".

same thing! the 3 ( B ) makes the scale major; the b7 ( F ) makes the
scale mixolydian ( the 7 ( F# ) is ionian,.........)
so mixolydian penatonic, to me has the formular 1 2 3 5 b7 ( major
pentatonic = 1 2 3 5 6 ): ionian pentatonic i would call 1 2 3 5 7,
lydian pentatonic i would call 1 2 3 #4 7,.............)
but, i never read names likes mixolydian pentatonic,........
major pentatonic and minor pentatonic are the only names that most of
the musicans are understanding. every other scale name you have to
explain.
just my 2 cents
