Where did TAB come from?

The first time I saw Tab was when I was taking jazz lessons in the
60's.
Though not a jazz tune, I had to learn to play the William Tell
Fanfare from sheet music.
This is the old 'Lone Ranger' tune.
I bought the sheet music and to my surprise it was written in
tablature for classical guitar.
I never saw tab again until the advent of the internet 30 years later.

Pt,

There's a wikipedia article on musical notation. Tablature for lute began
in the Renaissance. There was a resurgence of tab in the late 20th century.
I remember seeing tab in the 1980s. Don't recall it from the 60s or 70s.

Mid 70s when I started to learn the guitar, tablature was around, and even
if not in every songbook, was available. I still have the tab for Stairway
to H, and Classical Gas on old thermal photocopier paper from around 1976.

There has been tab for stringed instruments for thousands
of years in both India and China. Probably Africa too.

And even New Mexico. Possibly.
But just the eastern portion.

Your opinion doesn't even count! We're talking about people that play
something worth while.

I had been playing for about 20 years before I discovered tab in the
mid-80s. The book in question was copyrighted 1976 and came with SN and one
of those plastic sheet record player thingies. All in all pretty
comprehensive, and pivotal in my musical development.
