Sure theres tons of places that sell 3-48 nuts. What I want to know is
where online can I get them that for sure fit the humbucker mounting
screws.

Seymour Duncans site and many other posters recommend using them on
your mounting screws when the threads are stripped on your humbucker.
Ive got 3 of them that are stripped. Two on my Les Paul Custom and
one Dimarzio.

I need the nuts to fix it. Now the problem is I have to order online
as they dont have them locally. Shipping is 8-10 bucks for even these
nuts. I dont want to order multiple times. Ive seen some screw supply
stores that talk about fine and coarse and other types of 3-48s.

Id like to know where specifically to order 3-48 nuts that fit on
mounting screws. Im sure many repair shops use them right?
However Ive never gotten an answer to this question.

I have been able to find odd and small size nuts & bolts at both Home Depot
and Lowes. Look in the pull-out drawers in the fasteners section. Failing
that, I have gotten "close enough" hardware and made it work by drilling out
the holes in the pickups to accommodate the new size. What did you say this
was for, a mounting screw? No problemo.

Yeah but I wanted to restore it to the correct mounting screw used on
Les Pauls. In an act of stupidity, Ive had this Les Paul Custom for
eons and during one of the phases when I stopped playing for a while
the nearby stores didnt have any mounting screws so I just bought any
screws at the hardware store and used thread cutting bolts. Now I want
to restore it so the standard Gibson mounting screws work.

The problem is there seems to be some different threads I think fine
and coarse or whatever though I maybe wrong.

I tried ordering from some nut and bolt places one in Georgia and like
I feared --- nuts $2 shipping $16 !!! And I wont know if it even fits
until I get them. Just think of ordering several times if they dont
fit and ending up paying 60 bucks for some nuts.

I just dont understand why no one has any exact info. Seymour Duncan
even has it in their facts. They say get a 3-48 nut and solder it on
the humbucker if the threads are stripped so it must be a well known
repair. Ive called all the guitar places near me, nope. Ive written
to Stewart McDonald. No help. I finally did write to Gibson but havent
had a reply yet.

Some have recommended hobby shops and Im combing the ones in my region
right now.

Are they the same? Thats the main thing I want to know.
I can order 3-48 nuts over the net at a ridiculous cost.
But I want to make sure they are exactly what I need
if Im paying $16-17 for a few small nuts.

I know there are fine and coarse threads and I have this one nut that
seems to fit the screws but the thread doesnt seem to match. It goes
on a few turns then freezes.

Great Stewart McDonald answered me in one day -- Gibson , Im getting a
vibe that they wont bother. Maybe I should call.

Dude, theres no coarse or fine in 3-48 screws. the 48 stands for the
thread count. 48 threads per inch. That's the coarse thread. If it
were a fine thread it would be 3-56. Either you have to determine that
your screw is in fact a 3-48 or just buy nuts AND screws that you know
will work together.

Or drill and tap the old threaded hole for a slightly larger screw.

Wrong thread count.

Some hardware stores (Ace) have a good selection of small machine screws
but nuts are harder to find.

If I didn't turn anything up at a hardware store, I'd check an
electronics repair or vintage camera repair house.

Thats what I wanted to know. I assumed that but at some sites they
talk about different thread sizes as if its the same spec.

The funny thing now is I took my standard mounting screws I bought
from music stores to a hobby store and they swear its a 5-40 not a
3-48 as Seymour Duncan and others say. Thats the freaking confusion
I wanted to avoid.

All I know is i did get some nuts that seem to work with the std
screws but he only had locking screws so I have to enlarge the locking
nylon part to get them to not lock up.

The screws on my son's seymour duncan pickups are different than the
ones on my Gibson. They are indeed smaller. I really don't want to
take either guitar apart to put a caliper on the screws, though so I
can't say exactly what the specs are. I've never had to search for a
replacement.

That's something I guess. Good luck with it.

If they're 3-48, they're 3-48. Only thing that will
vary is the length.

If you're paying 16-17 bucks, then send half that
amount to me and I'll go to Ace and buy them and
ship them to you. I think they're 5c each at Ace.

Take your bolt to Ace, find the helpful hardware
man with the red vest and the phone headset, show
him the bolt, he'll do the rest.

Get them locally. Get sets of nuts AND screws or just get #4 screws and
a tap and re-thread the holes. Put it back together and then stop doing
whatever your doing to cause the threads to tear out. There's no excuse
for it.
