I've written here previously that I'm a
D'Addario/Planet Waves dealer but that I
don't like and don't sell the "Humidipak"
humidifier.

In case any of you use the PW Humidipak,
some of them have been recalled. Here's
the notice they sent to dealers -

*****

To All Planet Waves Dealers:

We have discovered that we have a potential manufacturer's defect as it
relates to the film lining of the Humidipak packettes. Internal testing has
discovered that there is a possible risk that minor spotting of the
Humidipak solution may become visible on the packette over time. This
possible manufacturer's defect in the film lining is applicable to all
Planet Waves Humidipak 2-way humidity control system products for fretted
and bowed instruments. The affected models are:

PW-HPK-01 PW-HPK-02 PW-HPRP-01 PW-HPRP-01H

And the affected production lot numbers: 3396; 3406; 3416; 3426; 3456; 3466;
3476; 3486; 3526

These production lot numbers are only visible on the Humidipak packette.
They are not displayed on the outer foil pouch.
Humidipak products offered under the name of Rico Reed Vitalizer are NOT
affected by this situation.

While we believe the number of defective units is minimal, it is impossible
for us to determine which packettes are subject to spotting until the
process actually starts. Therefore, we regret to announce a total recall for
all Humidipak packettes contained in the above mentioned model numbers.

To assist in our recall efforts, please go to
www.planetwaves.com/humidipakrecall. This site will be activated Tuesday,
September 4th.

Why don't you sell the Humidipak system? Just curious. I like it. In this
weather my cases are at about 55% to 60% at 88 degrees F. The humidity is
43% and 93 degrees. 3 months so far without having to mess with sponges.

Because the $12 humidifiers that I use last
forever, or at least for 30+ years, the longest
one's I have in service. And I never have to replace
the expensive "humidity pack".

BTW, 50-60% is over humidified. Your guitar was
built at 45%. You'd be better off NOT using the
humidipak if the current RH is 43. BUT, you do
have to measure the humidity in the house or
wherever the guitar is. It might be 43% @ 93 deg
outside. But inside, with AC running it's probably
much drier. If that's indeed what you're doing,
then I'd suggest you're on the right track. Still
50-60% is high.

Better buy a box of those "Over humidified" refills
for the Humidipak.

Or, you could use the $12 kind. The degree of "messing
with the sponge" for me means I hold it under the faucet
for maybe 5 seconds, then I wring it out.

Did you do a lot of those Emergency Broadcast Warnings?
Yes. Had it been an actual emergency I would have hid.

39 percent 93 degrees inside the house, no AC
58 percent 90 degrees in the guitar cases
I bought one of those Radio Shack remote humidity temperature stations with
three wireless remote sensors. large changes in humidty probably do more
damage than over or under humidification, the wood moves more which destroys
glue joints or if the glue is stronger than the wood causes the wood to
crack. The guitars were set up with the humidty around 52 percent.

Ok. Then you're applying the concept with a logical
plan.

You're just paying too much for a humidifier that
may be recalled/defective.

At least you're addressing the problem.

With the Radioshack thing I could probably use any type of humidifier and
know what is going on. I bought the thing because I have 3 guitars.

I heard that the Lumpidak has also been recalled. It was reported as
enhancing Dylanesque tunes.
