He just wanted to know what it is and what it is worth. Wanted to know
cause he will be taking guitar as an elective at school in the next two
yrs. And i wanted to know if i need to get him a new one or if it was
good enough. Didnt want to pay too much till i saw if he was
interested-he wont let me teach him anything. Not that i know that
much, but enough to have got him started.

It's probably worth $60, but he probably doesn't
really need to know what it's worth in order to
take lessons. He needs a guitar that is playable,
meaning the neck, frets, and other parts of the
guitar that are subject to wear, are in reasonable
shape and within normal tolerances of wear.

Without looking, I'd guess it's surely a Samick,
Indonesian built, copy of some popular model
like a Fender Stratocaster.

Regardless of what it costs, take it to a
professional luthier and have him do a setup.
That will cost maybe $50. Unless the thing is
worn beyond the adjustment point, that should
allow the guitar to then play just fine.

For guitar as an elective at school, I think
I'd want a $60 guitar, exactly what you have,
not a $600 or $6000 guitar.

Thank you Lumpy. He (we) bought it at the music store here in town and
it is in very good shape and new strings at the time. I just didnt get
a good amp for it till i found out how interested he was so i didnt know
how good it would sound.

It dont have a whammy bar and he wanted one put on it. Can or should
that be done? Or is that for the next guitar he buys in the case he
happens to fall in love with the guitar instead of every other girl.

Thanks again,

It would cost more than the guitar cost.
If he's a brand new beginner, he's going to
have plenty to learn about without learning
how to work the whammy bar as well.

in the case he happens to fall in love with
the guitar instead of every other girl.
If he sticks with it and learns on the $60
guitar, then wants to try something else,
then buy something else. He will have a
better sense then of what style of guitar
he might want. Maybe he'll get a chance
to experiment with other students' guitars
in class. He may decide he doesn't like
whammys. Or he might like a totally different
style of guitar.

Get him playing a little bit. And as for girls,
they will start falling in love with him instead
of the other way around, thanks to his guitar skills.
He will now be able to pick and choose.

I don't know about that guitar, however if he takes guitar in
school he may need to use an acoustic, possibly even a nylon stringed
classical type. I don't know if the school will have a bunch of
beginners in a class plucking away on electrics. Before doing anything
else find out what kind of instrument the school recommends.
