Homemade Instrument Cables?

Anyone here have any experience with making their own instrument
cables? I know there's some soldering involved. I need some custom
lengths and lately they seem so expensive to buy. Would it be cheaper
to make my own? Can you get the actual cable in bulk? Like in rolls
akin to Cat5 or coax cable rolls?

I did a ton of searching a few months back and found a bunch of sources to
buy instrument cable in bulk. The hard thing to find, though, was the GOOD
Switchcraft plugs. By that I mean the ones where the right-angle plugs have
a round part on the back where it says "Switchcraft." It turned out to cost
too much, so I went with George Ls--his connectors take up less real estate
on my pedalboard and they're solderless, so I could even resize a cable
during a break in a set if I wanted.

Most of the big electronics components places (Mouser, etc.) carry the
Switchcraft, Neutrik, etc. connectors and they'll be a fair amount cheaper
than George L's. You may have to order a few of them to get a good price,
but then it's pretty easy to use up 10-20 of them quickly. The same
places can get you quality shielded instrument cable. Markertek and Parts
Express are two companies that cater specificly to audio and video, so may
be more helpful/easier to sort through than more general electronics
sources like Mouser.

Similar to the George L
product, but with much
better manaufacturing
and performance -- and
a far more sensible
price!

Interesting.

The Geroge L stuff is pretty pricey, if I remember correctly. This is about
a buck a foot.

I'm definitely going to give it a try when he has right-angled plugs. Hope I
don't have to wait 13 weeks for it like I have for my pickups.

Been there and done that ! It's not difficult or expensive to get
setup. A decent soldering iron, switchcraft plugs, some good belden
cable are all you really need . I used shrinkwrap for stress relief
on mine. Made my own mic cables too.

Good advice. All cables are wired straight through btw - pin 1 to pin 1,
pin 2 to pin 2 etc. Some advice I was given was to put araldite inside the
plug, to protect about it being pulled apart. This does make your cables
less easy to repair if you have an internal fault on the cable, but does
prevent excess stress on the soldered joints. Personally, I have never done
it, but it might be worth trying? It sounds a little dodgy to me though,
perhaps the rest of the group would comment on this?

You can certainly buy shielded two-conductor audio cable, and good
quality plugs in a radio supply store, and make you own (I've done it
for years). Yes, it is cheaper, but the cable will only be as reliable
as you are careful to pay attention to details when making it. Yes, it
does require some soldering, but that's easy enough to learn. Final
thought: PLEASE don't cross-post.

You're right, pre-made cables can be a real rip off. I just saw a 6"
pedal to pedal patch cable for over 15 bucks.. ouch!! I've always made
my own using Belden cable and switchcraft ends, when I can find them.

I've been using the same ProCo cables and Switchcraft ends
since 1988. Anybody who says you can do better... I'd
challange them. I've cut them, recut them, put new ends on,
taken ends off, and they're as quiet and as unobtrusive as can
be. I looked REALLY hard when I was in the market for patch
cables - I saw a lot of crap out there. I ended up with some
Dimarzio 6" Blue patch cables - only because I've never found
a small right-end jack that was easy to work with. But
everything else - ProCo and Switchcraft...

I seldom bought anything factory made, until recently. I'm buying them now
because of arthritis and poor vision. Much of what I have bought is pure
junk, but it gets me through.

Coil cords seem very hard to find these days. It used to be that was all
that was available. If you wanted to run uncoiled cables from your boxes to
your amp you had to make them yourself, or buy junk ones and be prepared to
replace them periodically.

Don't coiled cables introduce a 'static factor' into your
guitar sound?? I thought they stopped making them because of
their inferiority to straight cables..

Do you really seek out coiled cables?? I never heard that
before!

Coil cords have their uses, like when jamming at home or on stage. For
recording I would use whichever cord worked well and was most convenient.

With all of the stage noise that a band produces while performing live,
static isn't all that noticable. Truthfully, I never noticed a coil cord
producing static. I guess it depends upon the quality of the cord.

I like being able to move around in the jamming room at home without
worrying about suddenly running out of length and then pulling things off
onto the floor. It's all in what you get used to, I guess.

I imagine that null spots (dead areas) can be a problem, despite the
diversity antenna set up that the receivers utilize. Not to mention people
walking around with 70 cm (UHF) handheld radios or high powered mobiles
driving by.

I'm a fan of coiled cables, too, and they aren't so easy to find anymore. I
used to carefully duct tape one end down to the stage where it went into my
first stompbox, and it gave me a nice radius of action onstage or out onto
the dance floor. Static was never a problem with a quality item. There used
to be a lot of cheap ones with molded ends that were junk (Radio Shack).

The stories about Jimi Hendrix getting his unique sound from coiled cables
picking up cosmic waves, however, would be difficult to prove.

But one of the things I like best about them is that you never accidentally
step on the cable, yanking the butt end of the guitar nearly down to the
floor. I HATE it when I do that! And, you get plenty of warning when you're
getting too far from your rig, and might be getting close to yanking
something over.

Hosa makes a nice one, good cable, good Switchcraft ends:

And a place that lists it for $10:

Maybe, but certainly the extra capicitance tamed the high end of the Strat,
and that was a good thing, indeed!

Yup. I was just watching "The Kids Are Alright" a while ago, and noted that
Townsend was used a coiled cable during the "Baba O'Rielly" and "Won't Get
Fooled Again" sequences. Just an observation.

Fender makes a coiled cable now, I think. Might find one at your local
Fender dealer, or they could order it for you, if you really want.

Well, I think that in the 60's, straight cables didn't exist -
or weren't as popular.... That's like noticing the Bell-
Bottoms and wondering why they weren't wearing boot-cut jeans
- they just weren't out there. All of the Woodstock footage
has coiled cables - that's the first thing I notice when I see
stills...

Have they ever been proven to be inferior?? Or is that just my
snobbish opinion of cables from that era :)

As another person pointed out, there were good ones and there were bad ones.
I never noticed a difference between coiled and straight that was really,
consistently, apparent.

As the other poster stated, I liked being able to move a bit without
worrying about jerking the plug out of the guitar or pulling the head off of
the speaker enclosure and onto the floor.

You could probably find a difference with a time domain reflectometer, but
life is too short to worry about such things if it isn't readily apparent.

Hi.
I've been making my own cables for years, saves a lot of money, and no
problems over purchased cables. One place I like is
http://partsexpress.com/, but you could do a Search at a Search engine for
electronics parts suppliers and find many. 100 and 1000 foot rolls are
pretty standard.
I like to use the 99% shield 7.5mm Belden cable and gold plated Dayton
plugs. I found some really good plugs apparently made for Guild at a guitar
show once, really massive barrels, spring relief, and about 50 cents a
piece.

What's your opinion of that 'spring release' concept??? I've seen them
in stores, but they've always struck me as something that wouldn't last -
like plastic hinges on a lunchbox - you open the lunchbox 100 times, and
the plastic wears out. Do they work?? And what do the springs really
do??
