I just bought an Applause by Ovation AE 128. Great looking guitar, has a
nice tone, and the price is unbeatable. Unfortunately, it has the usual
crappy factory strings, which sound kind of dull. I'm strictly rhythm, and
I play with a basement band with no illusions of ever playing publicly, but
I am looking for a bright tone and relatively light pressure for this
acoustic. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

I have one of those but I don't know enough about strings to offer you any
advice.

Good choice though.

I suggest Elixir 11's.
They will last much longer.

I disagree. The plain strings will wear
exactly as fast as a non Elixir set.

The coated strings will still suffer the
physical abuse of string against fret,
string over the saddles and the elongation
and hardening of the steel that makes up the
core wire.

The only thing a coated string will help
protect from is the chemical damage caused
by sweat, finger acids, pollutants etc.

The physical damage/stress that the strings
undergo is still there, coated or not.

Spend a third of the cost of coated Elixir's
and replace your strings 3 times as often.

Change your strings once a month and it's
what $7 a month? 23 cents per day. Cheapest
hobby you'll ever have.

I am new to guitar playing, just a little over a year. At first I bought
and changed strings frequently on my acoustic guitar. I found some Martin
strings I really liked and now use those.
Buy a selection by different manufacturers in the gauge you like. Change
them every few weeks. You should find some you like.
Old strings, use the solid strings to restring your cheese slicer or any
string to hang a bird feeder, squirrels can't climb them. Put them in a
closet and imagine that you may use them some day. I have a bunch......some
day I'll....well maybe my cheese slicer will break again.

Inquisitor,

I like D'Addario phos bronze strings on my Ovation. You really need to
try different string types from different makers to find your favorite
strings. If phos bronze strings are too bright try silk&steel. If phos
bronze aren't bright enough try 80/20. For now try tokeep the string gauge
(diameter) that came with the guitar.

I,
I used to use Martin Phos Bronze Extra lights, Very bright sound then I
switched to D'Addario Extra light coated Very bright sound also, which last
even longer than the Martin's did. The Martins turned color and soon after
lost ability to hold tune. I tried Ernie Balls and hated them your mileage
my be better, they sounded like a Banjo on both the six and twelve string.
But then I like a very thin pick also, really makes the twelve ring out.
